Is Online Therapy Right for Me? 5 Points to Consider From an Online Therapist in Arizona

The therapy world has evolved over time due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and many therapists and medical professionals have to go online for safety reasons.

Never in my time as a therapist did I think that this would happen and that I would be seeing people virtually!  I do believe in the importance of a therapeutic relationship between the person in therapy and the therapist as an important element.  It is important to me to create a safe place where individuals can come to and create trust, vulnerability, change, and growth.

Within the last few years, I have been utilizing telehealth (video) therapy to continue to help my clients grow and achieve their goals virtually.  I do see the same progress that I had when I was working with individuals in person, although it is a little different in some ways.

What to Consider When Considering Online Therapy

Telehealth therapy, also known as online therapy, has become a viable new way of seeking services for anyone with a computer, phone, or tablet.  Just like some medical professionals are now doing online visits, more and more therapists are also practicing telehealth therapy.  With the increased availability and ease of use, the internet now is the new method of receiving therapy.

Here are some common questions:

1. Where do I start?

You start by looking online!  There are a few therapist directories that can assist you in finding a therapist who does online sessions.  A few online resources include Psychologytoday.com, Zencare.com, or you can even call your insurance company to get a list of therapists in your area.  Many individuals that you will find on these websites will tell you if they do virtual visits or not.  It will also give you their background, what they specialize in, and sometimes even a video for you to hear their voice and personality.

In terms of confidentiality and privacy, many practitioners use encrypted video software.  You may have to download this software before your first appointment, and it is typically an easy step, but important.  The therapist must have guidelines of HIPPA compliant electronic symptoms to protect your privacy

If you are using insurance, it is good to check with your provider to see if they cover virtual visits, as some do not.

2. Can I still have a good therapy experience?

Yes and no.  The experience can be just as fulfilling as sitting in the office with a therapist, but there will be some differences.  If you want to work on having a positive experience, make sure to treat it as though you are going to the office.  Make sure to find a private spot in your home, with no distractions and quiet.  Turn off your phone, or put it on do not disturb, turn off any TV or music.  Make sure your pets and children are in a safe area where you will not be interrupted.  Take any distractions away from the area you plan to do therapy at.

3. Technical issues

Most of the time the assessment documents that you will be filling out before your appointment will touch on what to do if there are technical issues.  They will typically have a procedure of what to do if something goes wrong.

The one difficulty with online therapy can be if either you or the therapist have a bad internet connection, a phone or computer dies in the middle of a session, or if links are not working for you.  All of these issues should be discussed so that you as the patient know what to do if there is an issue with doing video sessions.

Online therapy is typically not appropriate for people who are actively considering suicide or in extreme crisis.

4. What if I don’t like it?

Remember that you are the patient, and you are buying a service.  If you don’t want to schedule another session, that’s okay!  I tell my patients that if they do not feel it is the right fit for them, I completely respect their decision, and also help them find a therapist who is in person to address their needs.  The most important piece is that you find someone and a system that feels good to you.

I suggest doing video consultation calls, which are usually free, to see how you feel about the experience in a short span of time.  That might help you make the decision on how comfortable you feel, and also if you like the therapist and their personality.  Doing a consultation video can be helpful in making this decision.

5. What if I do like it?

That’s great!  Finding the right therapist is a crucial step in the therapy process.  If you don’t feel connected to your therapist, or feel safe and comfortable, then you are probably not going to open up as much, which can affect your progress in therapy.  So that’s great if you found someone that works for you!

Many people who have started online therapy with me that were hesitant about it, ended up enjoying the process.  They are able to still have a session with me even if they are out of town for the week and don’t want to miss their appointment.  They have come to enjoy the convenience of it, and also still feel trust me as their therapist.
